Hunting Overview
The San Antonio / New Braunfels Area
The area of Texas where we are hunting is characterized as rolling plains, but the country is also fairly rocky and rugged. The landscape is characterized by grasses, mesquite bushes and various sporadic hardwood trees (particularly along a fence line).
By the way, this area, tragically, has been hit with a severe drought. However, this is good news for hunting for four reasons: 1) The dove population has actually been stronger than usual, due to the lack of rain. Spring rains often account for the destruction of dove nests and, hence, dove eggs. With the lack of rain, more eggs have hatched this spring, making the population higher, 2) The lack of rain means that there are fewer places for dove to go for water. These remaining spots are good places to lie and wait, 3) There are less allergens in the air (for those of us with allergies), and 4) The number of insects (particularly biting insects) has been greatly reduced.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If the hunting conditions prove to be poor, we may choose to move to another location. If that is the case, we will most likely travel to the Corpus Christi (Alice) area.
